TREŚĆ: Pokaż informacje o treści pozycji >>Despite the interest that exists in America`s immigrant past, in the contribution of national groups to the development of our diverse culture, little is known about the Polish immigrants (today from six to ten million Americans are of Polish background) or of Polish history and American-Polish relations. A POLISH CHAPTER IN CIVIL WAR america is of value in the area of Polish-American studies for both its careful research and for its insight. The author, Joseph Wieczerzak, is the recipient of the Kosciusko Foundation`s 1966 Doctoral Dissertation Award, an award designed to foster original and significant work on Polish-American topics. The volume focuses upon the mutual influence of Poland and America during the critical period of the War between the States and the Polish January Insurrection. It probes not only official documents, but makes a comprehensive inquiry into popular and journalistic reactions in the two countries. Professor Wieczerzak argues that there is a nexus between the two wars which has been long neglected or minimized by historians. He deals with, among other factors, the "sentimental legacy" which linked the emotions of Americans and Poles to each other`s struggles for freedom. The cover design represents the seal of the 1863 revolutionary National Government of Poland. Within the shield are the eagle representing Poland, the charging mounted knight representing Lithuania and the Archangel Michael representing Ruthenia. The words of the motto are “Equality, Freedom, Independence." |

TREŚĆ: Pokaż informacje o treści pozycji >>To mark the 50^ Anniversary of the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences in Canada, members of its Ottawa Branch organised a symposium in November of 1993. The fourteen scholarly papers which were presented form the basis of this volume and offer the reader a representative sample of the Polish intellectual tradition in Canada - in literature, fine arts, the social and economic sciences, technology and medicine. Pół wieku upłynęło od chwili, kiedy profesorowie Oskar Halecki i Wilder Penfield założyli Polski Instytut Naukowy w Kanadzie. Działano w mysi hasła służenia Polsce, ukazując jej dorobek dziejowy, podkreślając koniecznosc walki o wolność polskiego Narodu. Rok po roku otwierała sie szerzej droga zbiorowego czynu. Coraz bardziej umacniały sie więzi kulturowe pomiędzy Polską a Kanadą. Na tle problematyki polsko- kanadyjskiej, w niniejszej książce pięćdziesięciolecia rysuje sie ogólnym konturem wkład naukowców i artystów polskiego pochodzenia do kultury Kanady. |

TREŚĆ: Pokaż informacje o treści pozycji >>On a bitterly cold winter`s morning in 1940, little Jan Wojciechowski and his family were rounded up by the conquering Russians to ~ begin the arduous journey to a labour camp in the Arctic. Along with miliions of other Polish citizens, they endured years of cruel hardship and deprivation. Miliions perished but the Wojciechowski children miraculously survived. This is the story of a barely known holocaust that brought young Jan to New Zealand in 1944; at its heart is a family who refused to be crushed by the terrifying force of Stalinism. A Strange Outcome also gives a fascinating glimpse into the fledgling beginnings of big business in New Zealand and the influences that put Jan, now known as John Roy, on the pathway to a happy and enormously successful life.`A triumph of humanity over the darkest of tragedies and cruelty. |
